from dump cakes to face masks...

my peach pecan dump cake (for Debbie if you're reading)

Today is Tuesday... and this morning was the first time I've been in a grocery store since this whole mess started. We had to return something that we'd bought online - so we decided to go to Walmart at 6:30 am when they opened for the 'elderly' (and of course it was raining and thundering this morning). But I have to admit, there was no one there - maybe 10 customers (all elderly and masked) in the whole store - so it was pretty safe and easy.

And this is my new 'cough suppressant' drink that my friend in N.O. told me try 3 times a day.  I'm doing it. It's not at all bad... just hot water, lemon, and honey. We were Skyping yesterday and I kept coughing. Explained to her that I have had a 'radiation' cough since 2000 and that it had gotten a bit worse lately. She was a nurse in her younger years and recommended I try this. So I shall.

And lastly, I will tell you a funny story... not funny ha ha, but funny to me...  along the lines of  'build it and they will come'

I've been sewing masks for family and friends for a while now. I'm not a great seamstress, but found a few patterns that I could do (and I have lots of quilting material). Anyway, we all have 3-4 masks each now and I continue to make them as I have a feeling  that we may need them for a while yet.

Anyway, I had these 5 women's masks (there are different sizes in the cone shaped ones for women, children, and men).  So this morning I thought... perhaps one or 2 of my pottery friends would like one. So I sent out a message to the group. Within a few minutes all 5 had been taken and I now have an order for a few men's sizes for husbands.  Who would have thought? Anyway, it's fine. I like making them and it makes me feel like I'm doing 'something' to help.

I'm going to close with a picture of a pale pink scarf I knitted a while back. I love the scarf (and the color), but had not 'blocked' it... so it continuously curled up when I wore it. I finally got around to blocking it... and it was a simple procedure. Don't know why I didn't try it sooner.

Guess that's it for today. Hope you all have a good week... and that in your area the numbers are going down. Here they continue to climb... 454 new cases in our county just yesterday and the 4th of July holiday coming up!

(The 4th of July was always my birthday celebration as a child. My birthday is July 6th so mama always had a family picnic out by the lake on the 4th  for my birthday). This year both DH and I will hit the big 7- 5!  I have mixed feelings... great to reach this age, yes? But my dad died at 75, so bittersweet in some respects.

Take care, stay home, wear a mask, and be safe!
Hugs,
Rian

  1. I love your masks, the fabrics are so pretty. (Your scarf is lovely too!)

Mom had a similar thing after she made herself a couple of masks--her step-daughter and step-son-in-law wanted some, and co-workers and friends wanted some....It can get out of hand pretty quickly. LOL.

I can't imagine only 10 people in Walmart. Here during the senior hours grocery stores seem to be busy, I've gone for groceries a few times at the tail end of the hour and parking lots have been busy. Walmart is ALWAYS busy here, perhaps because there's only one within a 60 km radius.

    Take care, stay safe!

    1. Thanks, Kim. I've not done a lot of sewing... just basic quilting. But the masks really aren't that difficult... pretty straight forward. However, like everything else I do, I'm not 'fast' at it. So it takes me most of the day to make 3-4 masks, not like some who can knock them out quickly. But I don't mind making them as long as people aren't in a hurry.
I was amazed that there were so few people in Walmart too. But then we have several around here.
Are you still blogging? I went to look for your last post and didn't find it...

    1. It's a 'very little' thing.... but at least it's something.

  3. Well, if I could, I too would take a mask, and also a piece of that peach pecan cake ... look delish!

    1. The peach pecan cake is really good... and so easy to do. As for the mask, I would gladly send you one - if you aren't in any hurry to get it. I'm not fast at doing things...

  4. That scarf is lovely beyond words. Thank you for making masks. The need will not go away soon.

    1. I agree, Joanne. The need will be around for some time... maybe even for some time after things get better. (they will get better, won't they?)

  5. Oh, I love your scarf - it is so pretty! You've got yourself a part-time job, sewing masks. :)

Birthdays this year are definitely different. Especially special ones - my brother turned 70 a few days ago. We were together for his 65th, and maybe we'll make his 75th.

    Take care and stay well!

    1. It's so strange, Mae. So many special occasions occurring during this weird time. Our daughter had her 20th Anniversary and her 50th birthday this spring, our youngest grandson became a teenager (13), oldest grand daughter graduated high school, and DH and I make our 75th... none of these celebrated with family gathered around - so strange.
You also take care and stay well... don't stop being cautious just because things are opening up. We opened up (Texas) and are now paying the price.

  6. Dear Rian, sharing homemade food (cookies) i enjoy bringing them to work. Before covid, they would go fast. Not so, now that people are afraid to put their fingers on the tin. So instead, i bring wrapped storebought candy - it's not the same. Oh well ... ;/

    1. I know. I tend to send 'care packages' to my kids and friends (mostly home-made cookies and granola), but don't dare send things now. Even though they haven't seen any problem with food, people may be hesitant.

  7. That is a beautiful scarf. And I think I have six face masks now, and recycle wearing them between washings. It looks like we will be using them for a long time. Stay safe and keep blogging! Are you working on the sequel book yet? :-)

    1. Hi DJan! We also have about 4 face masks each here... and do the same. We don't go out much, so don't wash them very often... (I do let them sit on the windowsill in the direct sun - heard that sunshine 'may' kill the virus - possibly).
And yes, I am working on the sequel to my book. It's about half done (maybe about 45 chapters so far). But as I stated many times, I work slow... so I can't be sure when it will be finished. But surprisingly, I find that more are reading "Time After Time" each month. We may never be rich from it, but to be honest I'm just thrilled that some people enjoy the story. Guess like the masks, it makes me fill like I contributed a little something...

  8. I do the senior shopping time at Walmart and am always delighted that everyone is wearing masks. Our pharmacy also opens at 6 which is really handy. Any other time in the store is is crowded with few masks. It is worth getting up early. Our numbers are kicking up dramatically also.
Good job on those masks. Like you I think they will be here for a while.

    1. Patti, this was my first time at the Senior shopping time at Walmart. We have been doing and will continue to do curb side pickup. But... as I said, there were few people there and everyone was masked. And Yes, the numbers are definitely kicking up there and here. How could they not with everything opening up and people acting like there's no danger. Seriously how hard is it to wear a mask? So many of our family is in the medical field that we KNOW how dangerous this virus is.

  9. Our Walmart will not take anything back now, or give a refund. I'm hanging onto a receipt for a bag of mostly rotten potatoes. Your masks look very nice. I can see why you now have orders for more. I've made myself one mask. It's okay, but not like yours. That is the prettiest pink scarf I've ever seen. Maybe I will try making another mask.

    1. Your Walmart won't credit you for returns? That's odd. We had to call once when they substituted something we couldn't use on a curb side pickup and they credited it over the phone. And this time we went in to return 2 items (not food) and they took it back without question and credited us. Maybe you should call the Walmart 800 number and see if they will credit you for your potatoes?
As for the masks - some of the patterns are easier than others. I googled CDC masks and made several that were simply gathered up on the sides. This cone shaped one is easy too once you see how it's done. I will gladly make a mask for you if you like... as long as you're in no hurry. I will however, say that these are not made for inserting a filter as some are. I did make a few for my daughter that you could insert a filter in... but those took me a lot longer to figure out.

  10. I'm right behind you in age. Hope some way, some how there will be a little bit of celebrating for you.

Ya, 4th of July is gonna be another covid disaster I fear. As you say common sense has been non-existing.

You did great with the masks!

    1. I will celebrate when the numbers start going down, Anni. But I did hear a 'little' common sense this morning as apparently our governor has now suspended all elective surgeries to keep hospital beds for Covid patients. It's probably not enough, but it's something.

  11. awwww, age is just a number. everyone says it but it's really true. if you stay active and vibrant, which it seems you have, you will be just fine. the scarf is beautiful, it looks to be similar in size to the one i am working on. mine will need to be blocked also, i use a yoga mat for my bigger knits!!!

    1. Debbie, I love cables and knots in knitted works... but they take a lot of 'attention' on my part anyway). Mostly I tend to do simple patterns that I can work on while watching TV. I have a fisherman's afghan that a dear friend made for me years ago that I absolutely love.
