Fall vaccines... are we ready?

Thinking about scheduling our vaccines for this Fall. How about you?

We always get the flu vaccine. We get the normal one - not the one especially for over 65. That one has always worked for us, so why change it. And I'm pretty sure we'll get the new covid vaccine.  We know more people with covid today than we did during the pandemic. It may not be as serious, but we still don't want it!

As for the new RSV vaccine, the jury is still out on that one.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on these three? We know people who don't get any of them (for different reasons) and that's fine. It's their call.

I had the real flu years ago and was sick for over a month... it was awful. I thought I was going to die and at times wished I would.  So,  I'll take a day or so of feeling bad with the flu shot as my body's immune system builds itself up over that awful time years ago any day.

I've never had covid (or if I did, I was symptomless) - even when DH had it in 2001. He was tested positive at the doctor's office - but his symptoms were similar to those of a cold. And I do believe the vaccines protected us to some extent. So, we will take another covid booster.

But we don't know enough about the new RSV vaccine to make a decision yet. So, I think we'll wait a bit on that one. If you know anything pertinent, please share.  I think it's helpful to know other people's thoughts and why they feel the way they do.

This is just a video taken at our daughter's place in the hill country. It's our daughter and granddaughter and 2 of their horses taken from their front porch. It has nothing to do with this post... I just like to look at it, so I thought I'd share.

Hugs,
Rian

  1. I reluctantly had a Covid shot and two boosters but as of now I will not get more. They do not prevent us from getting it and they do not prevent us from spreading it, so are not actually a vaccine. The CDC changed the definition of vaccine so they can call it that. Much research is coming out about the negative effects of that vaccine. I will follow the science and might change my mind.

    1. Terra, I appreciate your input and respect your choices. But personally I do believe that the vaccine has helped us... and probably more than anything, I feel that I'm actively doing something that could help - rather than sitting back and just taking my chances. I feel the same way about masking. If it could possibly help, I'm willing to do it, but that's just me.

  2. I'll have to wait, can't make up my mind yet.

  3. I think I had the flu vaccine already. Must ask my doctor. I need to schedule the Covid, and probably the RSV.

    1. We plan to get the flu vaccine first... then Covid. Still thinking about the RSV.

  4. Like you, I always get a flu shot and will have a covid booster. My jury is out on the RSV vaccine. I think the next vaccine I have will be for shingles

    1. Please get the shingles vaccine. I thought you had to be 60 to get the vaccine, but insurance covers it at 50. I did get shingles in my 50's and it was so miserable. I do not wish it on anyone!

    2. DH and I got our 2 Shingles vaccines last year. And I agree it's one you probably should get...

  5. Just got my high-dose flu shot yesterday. Our "older" immune systems are weaker than when we were younger, that's why you need the high-dose flu shot.
RSV is an evil lung problem for very young people and very old people. It will hopefully keep you from getting it, or having an illness mild enough to keep you out of the hospital. The main drug stores are getting it in, and if received from them instead of your doc office, Medicare is supposed to cover the RSV shot.
The newest covid shot is for a very mutated version of covid and is needed by everyone to keep this spread to a minimum. If you had covid before, or shots before, those wane and are less effective after a few months. As a former hospice nurse, I've seen many types of exits from this world, and covid deaths are the scariest! Get your shots! Linda in Kansas

    1. DM, our 2 daughter-in-laws are nurses and agree with you on how bad Covid deaths can be. We will definitely get the Covid booster and the flu shot, but not sure about the RSV - yet.

  6. Next up for me will be the Covid booster, then the RSV, and finally the flu shot. Hubby got the RSV shot with no problems, but I had a terrible time recovering from the second Shingrix, so I'm leery about RSV.

    1. DJan, the second Shingrix affected us too - but still better than getting Shingles. We will get the flu shot soon, then the Covid booster - not sure about the RSV yet.

  7. B and I have had the covid vaccine as well as the boosters. We never get the flu shot. B has never gotten the flu and I have not gotten it since I retired from teaching. No more students hacking all over me in class. We will be getting the covid vaccine again this month but do not know enough about the RSV vaccine yet to make a decision on it.

    1. Yes, teachers are really susceptible to the flu (and everything else). But grandparents who are around their school age grandkids are susceptible too...

  8. my son is a pharmacist and he tells me all vaccines are safe. i do not get the flu vaccine because i have such an impaired neurologic system, he understands my reasoning and is ok with it. i will wait a little while on the covid booster, i have not been in close contact with other people and i am very careful with washing hands, etc.

i also know a lot of people who have covid right now. they have mild symptoms but are staying home and have not been around many people!!

i have had shingles so many times, i just don't bother any more!!

    1. I do understand about your impaired neurologic system. My daughter has Hashimoto and won't get any of the vaccines either on advice of her doctor. I worry about her, but do understand her reasoning.

  9. We always get the flu shot and last year I qualified for the old person version. We wait until October so that it lasts later into the new year. I too know so many people my age getting covid. Two of my friend's husbands had to be hospitalized and another friend, who beat lung cancer last year, had to be hospitalized, too. We have had every booster and did both test positive for Covid last January and had no symptoms except tiredness. So in my opinion, the boosters work! I haven't made up my mind on the RSV one. My youngest grandchild is four, but he did get bronchitis last year and had to have breathing treatments. I think I just convinced myself on that one, too!

    1. We usually wait until October also for the flu shot, but trying to get it as well as the Covid booster and my next B12 injection all in at least 2 weeks before we will be getting together with family in October.

  10. The flu and Covid boosters arent yet available here, but I will avail myself of both when they are. I've gotten the flu vaccine for a number of years, and although I've had colds I've managed to avoid the flu. Covid for me is a no-brainer. While this strain may be more mild that earlier variants, I'm not taking a chance. This vaccine began being developed after the SARS breakout in Toronto in 2003.
I'm not aware that an RSV vaccine has been approved here in Canada. Not certain about the need for it...at least not yet.
The video made me chuckle...the horses come to the porch for their treats. :)

    1. Actually Mae, ours are just becoming available... and we're jumping on them because of a family get-together coming up. And yes, the horses come to the porch as well as the chickens, dogs, etc.

  11. My friends have already gotten all three. Unfortunately, the last times I got vaccines, I had that plugged ear feeling and then vertigo. I don't know if it's connected at all. However, my doctor advised me to not get the RSV because of my past history (plugged ears and vertigo) and he felt the symptoms of RSV shouldn't be too bad for me. Hopefully. Fingers crossed. I'm getting the flu shot tomorrow for seniors and I'll get the COVID later. I will though.

    1. Kay, I understand your hesitance... that vertigo sounds awful. We're getting the flu shot today and hopefully the Covid booster next week. Still undecided about the RSV.
