Storm came through here in North Texas Tuesday morning. We were awakened at 4 am by a tornado warning alert and sirens! Actual high winds and rain hit the area about 5 or 5:30. Our area lost power, but we have a generator... so we were fine. But power stayed out in the area till about 7 pm Tuesday night. Granddaughter's school was closed due to the power outage - as well as some businesses.

this is where the tree fell from the creek area across our fence |

this is where the middle part lies across our yard |

and this is the very top of the tree that's almost in our driveway |
But outside of branches and trees down (huge one by the creek and behind our neighbor's house fell and came down across our fence and back yard.) Really huge tree - maybe 30-40 ft... and 20 ft is laying in our yard! I've been calling the city as the tree is part of the greenback by the creek that I'm guessing belongs to the city? Anyway, we just need the city to come cut it up... and it's laying across our whole yard almost into our drive-way.
We will take care of the fence, but think the city should remove the tree. However, I've been calling city services and haven't gotten a call back yet. We are also calling our insurance company to see what they think.
OK... another thing. Those of you who have been following my medical tests know also that other things have been going on. So recently my PCP ran another series of tests pertaining to my thyroid. The reason for this was because the pet scan showed 'inflammatory thyroid changes'. I found this curious as even though my thyroid tests have always been normal, my daughter has Hashimoto (a chronic auto-immune condition where antibodies attack her thyroid gland). It's an immune system malfunction. Well, the nurse practitioner called me Monday to say that this particular test shows me positive for Hashimoto too. This is a new development.
Now that's how this week has started.
Then of course there was the President's state of the union speech last night. We didn't listen to it although we usually listen to these. I always enjoyed listening to Obama speak. But I can't listen to this President speak... it un-nerves me, makes me feel uneasy, and anxious.
So, here I sit on a Wednesday afternoon trying to find calm on a beautiful cool sunny day. Life is good... for now... so, I'm trying hard to appreciate each day as it comes. But it's difficult not to worry about what may come in the days ahead under this administration. There are so many things being done under the 'guise of good'... that are hurting so many. How can anything that hurts people be for the good?
Think I'll stop here today and have an afternoon tea/coffee break with DH. Will continue tomorrow.
Now it's Thursday and I just got back from my Mammogram... ugh! Really dislike those since I have a lot of scar tissue that make them painful. Anyway, done and done!
Now we're heading out to City Hall to see if they can do anything about this giant tree in our yard...
Found out that the city doesn't own that land. The Chinese Bible Church that sits on the other side of the creek does. City Hall sent us over there. We talked to the manager there and he took the info and pics and said that they would get back to us. He was very nice. Hope they do follow up.
Oh.. I did pick up a new plant for the front room over the weekend. It's a Monstera. Isn't it gorgeous? DH was looking for mulch and I was looking at plants and this little beauty said, "Look at me! Take me home, please!"... and I did!

I call him Monty... (all my plants have names). |
OK... time to close. Leaving you with this little gem of a meme:
Hugs (virtual),
Rian
Oh Rian, thank you for this wonderful post. I am so sorry to hear of your new diagnosis, but at least it's treatable, right? I love the way you write and lift me up when I read your words. The world situation is so dire that I keep bursting into tears at the drop of a hat. We are in for some very rough times ahead, I fear.
ReplyDeleteDJan, there is no treatment for Hashimoto - until it causes your thyroid to stop producing. Then you are required to take the synthetic thyroid hormone. My daughter takes this as it destroyed her thyroid during her first pregnancy and made it impossible to have another child. I wasn't aware that I too had this as even though this test shows that antibodies are attacking my thyroid, so far it is producing normally.
DeleteAs for the world situation, we can't let it overwhelm us...
Gosh what a week! That storm must have been something. I hope the church gets the tree removed for you. Hopefully your thyroid just remains as is so you don't have to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteIt is one thing after another with this administration, isn't it?
It's always something... but my philosophy has always been 'what is, is... and we can handle it". Not always sure how (especially when it comes to the political atmosphere) but I won't stop believing that hurting people is NOT the answer.
DeleteGoodness, what a mess on your property! I hope the church will get that taken care of for you.
ReplyDeleteI'm only vaguely familiar with Hashimoto, though I've been on thyroid meds for other reasons since I was 25. Many decades now!
Try to take good care of your mental health through these crazy times. Sometimes easier said than done, I know. 💕
The church people came around and took pics... so hopefully they will follow through.
DeleteYou've had quite the week. I'm glad to hear the storm wasn't too damaging, and hope the church comes through with removing the tree from your property.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your thyroid issues - it makes me wonder if the syndrome isn't hereditary. If so, can testing be done on your daughter's child to prevent/avert the damage?
Take care.
Mae, apparently Hashimoto is a genetic disorder. And yes, having my granddaughter checked is a good idea... although I've been told that there's no cure... only thyroid meds if needed.
Deletewow!!! what a storm!! i have been thinking about you, hoping everything is o.k. sorry to hear of this new problem with your thyroid, take care of yourself!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, Debbie, I'll be fine. Hope you are doing well and feeling better.
DeleteYou've had an eventful week Rian !
ReplyDeleteWe are very familiar with those tornado sirens living in the tornado alley.... unnerving at the best of times, and despite the tree damage, I'm glad to hear you are safe.
Monday, we had twelve trees cut down, it broke my heart, but they were Ash trees that had succumbed to the Ash Borer insect and at the slightest heavy wind they would have been prone to topple.
Sorry to learn that you have Hashimoto disease, I have problems with my thyroid and take Synthroid daily.
Warmer weather in the horizon, it will feel good to get outside after long winter days.
Hugs,
Jo
Cutting down 12 trees... that would be hard. There are multiple trees in our back and by the creek. We've had branches fall, but never had a tree topple until now. We've been here 40 years, so that's not bad. Both DH and my daughter take Synthroid. And I'm definitely with you, Jo... can't wait for spring to be here (and stay).
DeleteRian I'm very sorry I wasn't able to comment sooner, especially after I saw all these fallen tree photos. That's unbelievable, but what is MORE so is the runaround you two got. Please keep us updated on this. Also, the Hashimoto condition. I think my mom had this, need to do some more reading up. I didn't see the President's State of the Union (thank goodness) and I do love your new indoor house plant. :^)
ReplyDeleteDug, so good to hear from you. As for the tree, it's the weekend, so I don't expect anything to happen... but hopefully this week someone will come out from the Church to take care of it. I will keep things updated. It actually took out a part of our neighbor's retaining wall... but they are out of town, so don't even know about it yet.
