Wanted to get a post in this weekend... but no idea as to what to write about.
We've watched a few interesting series on TV lately. One was "The Heart Guy" on Tubi and one we just started, "Anna Pigeon" on USA Network. This last one is taken from the series of Navada Barr's books where Anna is a park ranger for various national parks. It was one of my favorite reads, so I'm looking forward to the TV series.
It's Sunday and I was drinking my 2nd tiny cup of coffee in the front room. I sit in there among my plants and drawings when I first get up in the morning. DH sits in the den listening to football talk.
Anyway, DH came in and said that the big box turtle was out back eating from the cat dish. He tells me this so I can go out and give him some of my liverwurst (which except for the turtle no one else will eat)
So I did... but for some reason I must have scared him, as he started to run away (which he doesn't usually do). So I threw some liverwurst in front of him as he departed. He stopped, sniffed it, and started eating. I will be more careful next time not to startle him... as I hate for him to miss his treat.
Now I know this isn't terribly interesting to some. Who wants to hear about a turtle and his liverwurst? Well, too bad... as that's all I've got.
There is another story that I could bore you with... it's about Missy (feral cat) and Georgie (baby raccoon). Missy hangs around the back patio most of the day... and sleeps on the chairs at night. Georgie (who is George Clooney - his daddy's child) has learned to come by in the evening, sometimes several times. He looks in the back French door and wants treats. Being young, he isn't afraid of anything... would probably come inside given the chance. So he walks right up to the door even if Missy is laying there. He is a little thing, but she leaves and keeps her distance.
Problem is... DH wants to feed Missy - and Georgie won't leave. He asked me to chase Georgie away with a broom so he can feed the cat. I said no!... I'm not going to traumatize the baby when Missy can eat anytime... to just leave them be. We did and eventually Georgie left and Missy ate.
Again, not a terribly interesting story... but what life is like around here.
Years ago when we were having the kitchen redone (2005), the contractors and workers asked me what was that they were seeing in the back yard. I said "oh, that's just a rabbit and a tree rat that apparently became friends as they laid together in the back every afternoon". The men thought this was weird. But to be honest, we'd seen things like this in the back for the past 40 years... not unusual.

When we let the grass grow long in the back in the spring, the ferals love it. They play and hide in it... and I take pictures.
i appreciate wildlife, especially when it is right there in i enjoyed the pictures and videos. sometimes we have to make lemonade out of lemons, you did that here. good luck next week, i will be thinking of you next week, i hope all goes well!! ooooh and you have the cutest critters!!

DeleteRian those bobcats are beautiful, I love your big grass back there for those ferals. I wish you wouldn't worry about boring anyone, you're not! I for one enjoy your writings and love when you share. That was funny and sweet about the box turtle and the liverwurst. You are the Critter Lady for sure. I pray the dental visit goes well, I wish I had one of those Valiums right now to ease my long covid discomfort but worry I'd become addicted to them. Please write again soon. ☺️🧡💛😽👍
ReplyDeleteDug, those young bobcats were beautiful... and too young to worry about hunting. They seemed more interested in playing around with each other. As for the liverwurst, I'm happy to share with the box turtle. He really likes it... and the rest here think it's awful. As for the Valium, I know one could get addicted... however, they only give you a few (4), so I doublt it would be a problem. Plus, I hate anything that makes me feel 'off'... but if it will calm me enough to get through this procedure, I'm willing to try.

ReplyDeleteReally? You like liverwurst? You are the only person I know that does... besides me and the turtle. I started eating it again a few months ago when my PCP mentioned she didn't think I ate enough protein (I'm not a big meat eater). So I started adding liverwurst and/or breast of baked chicken to my cheese and crackers (and sometimes half an avocado) lunch. And DH will be with me when I take the pre-procedure valium...

DeleteI actually loved this because it really does feel like a little window into your everyday life, and honestly, I would happily hear about the turtle and his liverwurst. The way you described trying not to scare him and making sure he still got his treat was so sweet. Then Georgie turning up at the door for treats and Missy patiently giving him space made me laugh because it really does sound like the animals have their own little routine around your home. After 40 years of watching raccoons, possums, feral cats, birds and even bobcats come through the yard, I can understand why you see it as completely normal while someone else might find it fascinating. I especially loved the thought of the cats disappearing into the long grass to play and hide. There is something lovely about having a garden where wildlife feels safe enough to keep coming back. I hope your dental procedure goes smoothly this week too, and that the Valium makes things a little easier for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melody. I appreciate your kind comments. And we do try to make the back a safe place for the critters. We realize that everyone doesn't care for wildlife and find them a nuisance or an inconvenience... but to be honest, they've never caused us a problem and we enjoy and find their activities educational and entertaining.
DeleteI love seeing the wildlife too. We have a squirrel that runs along the fence line and stops to look into the camera on the shed. Posing perhaps?

ReplyDeleteTrying again... Probably posing, Mae. They come and eat the dry cat food on the porch and love it when I throw apple peelings out there for them and the turtles. Recently they've become aware that I put cat treats on the cat tree for the cats and coons... but they've found them and now check the cat tree daily. It's Ok... they can all share.
DeleteWe don’t have most of these fun creatures in Hawaii, but we’re seeing some of them here in Illinois where we are visiting.
