Hi Everyone! Happy Halloween! Actually I'm not much of a Halloween person. I know some, like my DIL, love Halloween with the decorations and the costumes, etc. I'm not that person. It's OK for the kids to come by and Trick or Treat and I do put out a Pumpkin and a few ghosts, ravens, etc.(and heavens know, DH buys enough Snickers, Kit Kats, etc. to feed an army) - but I've just never been fond of the whole idea. For one, I don't like people ringing your doorbell at night. Yes, for Halloween I do make an exception, but still...
Anyway, my feelings are beside the point, as the kids like it. It can be fun. It used to be fun... when life was different. Now I think everyone is safer with the churches, schools, etc. having parties and not doing the 'door to door' thing. (Just my opinion)
Anyway, we had another visit to the Vet's this week... but not for Jack. Jack, as usual, has rallied again and is eating well. This time it was for Ghost, our little gray cat with the genetic kidney probs. However, it wasn't her kidneys. She developed a rash on her back and since I've never seen any skin probs with my cats, I panicked. As the case was, she had somehow come across some fleas (now our cats never go outside... so we don't get this... but I suppose DH could bring them in from mowing the lawn or something? - or possibly when we took the little feral kitten that was screaming outside our bedroom window about a month ago inside for a little while before we brought him over to the adoption center, we could have brought in a prob? He was only inside a short time and we kept him in a box in the bathroom.... but who knows. Anyway, we treated all the cats... just in case. It cost us another small fortune, but we were glad to know that Ghost didn't have a serious skin prob.
Now talking about 'skin'. DH and I went for our first ever Dermatology appointment this week. With all the doctors we already have; Family Physician, Dentist, Eye dr, Eye specialist, Oncologist, OB/Gyn, etc. we now have a Dermatologist (my Oncologist recommended his). A good friend of ours has 2 family members with Melanoma, so we decided maybe it would be a good idea to have things checked out. It was definitely an interesting experience. She was very nice and very thorough. As it turned out, she removed 4 moles from me that she considered 'questionable' which will be sent off to biopsy... and one on DH's face. I've put off doing this for a long time as my philosophy (which is a result of my BC) is that one is well until someone tells them that they aren't.
Well, that's enough for today. I have some errands to run before the Halloween Trick or Treaters start their rounds. And if I have time, I usually make DH a custard pumpkin pie for Halloween. Have fun!!
I will go out for dinner with my son tonight. We do not get Trick or Treaters here. I think they like denser neighborhoods over our spread out country road.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Halloween dinner!
DeleteI'd like a piece of that pie, thanks! :-)
ReplyDeleteGood for Jack for rallying, he's a tough one, isn't he? And I'm glad it was "only" fleas for Ghost. Though if you treated with Advantage, yes, that would cost an arm and a leg! Here in Canada it's about $15 or so before tax per small vial.
And happy Halloween. I'm the nasty middle-aged lady who does nothing and who doesn't give out candy. I did the first few years I was here, but not in a long time. I don't know what it will be like this year, but in recent past years it's probably been close to 50-50 on giving out candy versus not. I remember being surprised last year at the number of units that were dark.
I just don't get Halloween. I went out when I was young, pre-twelve, dressed as a ghost or in too-big clothes, like a tramp, and that was it. Today it's a big to do--great marketing, actually. Someone's making lots of money off the day! :-)
Jack IS a tough one. He absolutely amazes me. And yes, we were glad it was "only" fleas for Ghost too... although I was embarrassed that I didn't see that. However, we used Revolution on all of them which did cost over $100... just for the vials.
DeleteAnd I think Halloween is actually evolving to be more of a party thing than a door to door... which might be for the best.
I have your same philosophy about health - it might also be called "putting ones head in the sand!" Hope you have a not too scary TX Halloween. We will get no little Trick or Treaters - too cold, the kids would freeze.
ReplyDeleteHalloween is all over for us. No door knocker this year but I think that is because it was a stormy night and there was a big party at the stadium - which I think is a much better idea.
ReplyDeleteGlad to know that there is not much wrong with ghost and that Jack has picked up again.
Diana
Diana, we didn't get too many trick or treaters either... less than 20... and most were the very young (which I do enjoy seeing in costume).
DeleteHi Barb, thanks for visiting. I dropped by your site for a visit also. Beautiful pictures! I was in Breckenridge once in my life... for my one and only skiing experience. It was January and it was like 4 degrees... freezing! (even more to a Southern girl). But it WAS beautiful...
ReplyDeleteI hope Ghost will be fine by the time you read this. And have a safe and happy Halloween (All Hallow's Eve). :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, DJan. You too.
DeleteHappy Halloween! The grand baby bat is so cute!
ReplyDeleteAfter some grocery shopping Lynette and I went to our favorite Chinese restaurant.
It was not too exciting but we had a peaceful good time.
In our area the kids don't knock on people's doors the way we used to do in Brooklyn. Maybe it's because the houses are too far apart. Where I grew up the houses just about touched each other.
It's getting so (less coming to the door) here also, John... and probably for the best. Maybe DH and I will close down and go out to dinner ourselves next year.
DeleteI'm with you, Rian, I do don't do Halloween either. Luckily we 're so far from the village we don't get trick or treaters at the door. I blame Spielberg's ET. Before that film the American celebration of Halloween had hardly been heard of in the UK. :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad the dermatologist has picked up the suspicious-looking moles in good time. They might never have become a problem, but on the other hand they might have done the opposite. Better safe than sorry.
Actually the Dermatologist's office called this morning to say that the biopsies were all benign. Scared me a bit that they called so soon (2 days), but happy with the results.
ReplyDeleteI just love that cat pic at the end!
ReplyDeleteI know. We have so many little black ferals around that this looks just like them popping up here and there in our yard.
DeleteNo, I’m not much of a halloweener either. We don’t even get kids at the door because we live down a long dark drive, away from the road.
ReplyDeleteHope your skin tests prove negative. My husband is constantly having BCCs removed; although they are not life-threatening, it’s not a pleasant op.
Friko, I think the door to door stuff is on it's way out... the world has gotten too big... and too dangerous.
DeleteMy biopsies came back benign. DH hasn't gotten his back yet. But we have a friend who has Melanoma and is constantly having to have more and more removed (probably 30 or more in the last few years).
Oh my, I do share the same philosophy that one is well until someone says otherwise!
ReplyDeleteIt is possibly not the 'best' philosophy but one that psychologically seems to be true.
