cats, grandkids, pottery, and books...

Ghost and Tux sleeping by the Aga

Today was a very busy day (not for the cats as you can see). It was our youngest grand daughter's first day of Kindergarten and we were all apprehensive. As it turned out, she did just fine... and I think she even enjoyed it. Today was only until noon, but tomorrow is until 3. She says she's looking forward to recess tomorrow so they can go out and play on the playground... (she explained to me that there wasn't enough time for recess today since it was only a half day)

I'm working on a few more clay projects, more windchimes, another bluebird soap dish, and an egg shaped bird house. Once I get them a little further along, I'll post a few pics on the Cheeky Chickens Studio site. By the time the new semester starts at the end of August, I should have several things to fire.

BTW, my jaw is definitely better. I don't want to talk too soon, but although I'm still careful with it, the TMJ inflammation or whatever it was seems to be gradually going away. (Hurray!)

There's been so much political uproar on the news that I've basically 'tuned it out'.  Sometimes I think people are losing their minds. That's all I'll say on that subject.

I am reading a good book written by an 85 year old woman that decided to take notes while living in a home for the aged. Actually it's 3 books in one, "Out to Pasture", "Over what Hill?", and "Older but Wilder". The author is Effie Wilder and her stories are both insightful and funny.

Oh, and I tried a new recipe from Cast Iron Comfort Food magazine today to celebrate grand daughter's first day of Kindergarten. It's a giant snickerdoodle cookie made in a cast iron skillet. DH actually saw this recipe in the magazine at CM and promptly bought it for me. They do have some other good recipes in it too...

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I'm hungry, looking at those pics, the one of the magazine and the one of your snickerdoodle. Yum!

Ghost and Tux are sweet, cuddled up together there. :-)

As for the news: Every single day, every news broadcast on any station I tune into, has the latest shenanigans in US politics. I constantly wonder if Canada HAS any of its own news (slight exaggeration, but not by much). Since I'm constantly hitting "mute", I think my best course of action is to stop watching the news or even bother going to news sites for the next oh, (probably) seven years or so.

Have a good rest of the week!

    1. Hi Kim! The giant snickerdoodle cookie was good. As for the news, sometimes I wish the US DIDN'T have any news to broadcast...

  2. That's good that your granddaughter had a good first day of kindergarten and is looking forward to more. It's funny to hear of kids returning to school now, as we are always in September here. -Jenn

    1. We used to go back after Labor Day... but times have changed apparently.

  3. I read Out to Pasture and found it amusing but not super interesting. Just not style although she was clearly a sweet woman. Please do not totally tune out the news. That is what they want as they remove regulations that protect consumers, the environment and how they spend our tax money. This is going to be a nasty time and we need as much outrage and action as we can get.

    1. Effie Wilder's books may not be for everyone... but her "take" on life in a home for the aged is wonderful. She covers serious and funny issues with grace and optimism. Great bed time reading for me. As for the news lately, it only serves to aggravate me and make me worry... people fighting over every little thing. And don't get me wrong, there are important issues out there... but some things are just rediculous.

  4. I have read all of Effie Wilder's books. Her books are a delight. I would go into assisted living in a heart beat if a few Effies went with me.

    1. Yes, her optimism is wonderful. Hers is the first I've ever read that put "a home for the aged" in a good light... and yet she covers the heartbreak and downfalls too. I'm with you, Patti. If you have to go to a home, that's the attitude to take with you.

  5. Cats never have a busy day, at least the ones I know. They have perfected the art of napping. I read Wilder's first novel before giving it to my step mom who was living in a retirement home and I have another of her books "One More Time" which I haven't read yet. How good your granddaughter enjoyed her first day of kindergarten; August seems early to me for school.

    1. I think their philosophy is that whatever is going on... napping is the answer. They may have something there.
As for our grand daughter, I've yet to find out how today's first full day went... but yesterday's half day certainly went well.

  6. It was Arkansas Patti who turned me on to Effie a while back. I read all her books and enjoyed them tremendously. Glad you've discovered them, too. :-)

    1. I have no idea where I got Effie Wilder's name... could have been from a blog. But I am enjoying them. They are perfect night time reading as they make me laugh. I'm a pretty eclectic reader, but mysteries are a favorite... however, some aren't conducive to late night reading.

  8. Such big beautiful cats. Ghost looks a lot like our Smokey. I think maybe you've said that before too. How sweet that your granddaughter was explaining to you about recess. Hope she had lots of fun today. Those Effie Wilder books sound like something my sister and I both would enjoy. Can't wait to ask her if she has read them.

    1. DH and grandson really liked giant cookie! As for the pottery, can't fire anything until September, but egg bird house is ready for first firing.
