a surprise treat... and a little rant

Hawaiian Surprise!!

We received this surprise package from Oahu this week! Goodies from Hawaii... from our son and his wife. Such a great surprise! There's macadamia nuts, cookies, candy, chips, coffee, etc. We thank you! thank you! thank you! Packages are such fun to get.

I occasionally send surprise packages too... usually things I know they like - like home-made nutty granola, or espresso cookies or our family's special rum cake. But it has been a while... maybe it's time to spread a little joy.

On another note:  One of the outside ferals (we call him Sammy) has started climbing the tree in the back. This isn't unusual as lots of cats climb trees.

But this is new for Sammy. We have never seen him up a tree. We expect he was after this squirrel that likes to pester him. Pretty sure he didn't catch him. But if you look at the 2 pics, Sammy looks guilty that we caught him in the act.

Grand daughter's idea during sheltering at home... forget lemonade stands - Let's dance!

Can't close this without leaving this next message:

Some businesses, beaches, etc.  opened this weekend... and from what we saw on TV, there was little social distancing and few masks. Can't understand it ... are people that obtuse?

This next chart is current for Texas:

(Now before someone goes all ballistic on me for not wanting to open up so soon, let me say that I can understand the need to work to pay rent and buy groceries, but it's hard to see how going out into crowds of possibly infectious people to spend a few hours having fun is worth the risk for your children or families. Yes, it gives you a few hours of emotional release - but at what price?)

Just my opinion...

As always, thanks for reading and please stay home and stay safe.

Hugs,
Rian

  2. What a great idea. Sending surprise packages. Thanks--think I will.
I don't understand the hurry of the people to mix and mingle when we really haven't had weeks with a down turn in new cases. The price is too high in my opinion.

  4. Sammy is so cute, been wearing masks and gloves since January, and sterilizing everything we bring home; if folks need to go out I say let them, I can't imagine what boat we'd be in if we weren't retired. We'd probably be loosing our home and worse, so I can't blame others

    1. I would like to agree... people should be free to make their own decisions... but if their decisions endanger others, then I’m not so sure... But this whole situation is so unprecedented and dangerous, decisions can’t be easy - and blame is never good.

  5. That was a lovely surprise. I also love to receive things from people who aren't expecting me to reciprocate, because I am much more likely to forget than follow through. I think this virus will be with us for a long time to come, and I fear for places like Texas and Georgia. We are in pretty good shape here in Washington State, thanks to our governor, who is in no hurry to open up before it's safe.

  6. I love the dance floor on the street!!! I have to admit I had the very same impulse when they drove away all the construction vehicles off my street last Friday.

  7. What a lovely surprise! Yum....macadamia nuts, I'd never tasted those until I went to Hawaii in 2015.

As for opening, our province is starting to do so as well. We've had less than 400 cases and only 6 deaths but I still worry for what can happen. Perhaps if those of us who can continue to keep our contacts at a minimum, especially with those who are financially needing to return to work, then perhaps we'll get through this with less issues. I guess only time will tell.

    1. If our area was doing well... cases declining and less deaths, I would agree that it was time to start opening so that people could get back to work. However, it's not the case here. And you are right, time will tell.

  8. Dear Rian, I agree with your thoughts about opening up after shutting down. Money is necessary, especially for those who cannot work from home and must pay for food and shelter and other necessities of life. But being out and about without masks and without social distancing seems foolhardy to me. Foolhardy and also dangerous. Its seems that those who do not take precautions are willing to endanger not only their own lives but those of their nearest and dearest as well as strangers. There is, in our culture, a growing disregard for the idea that "no person is an island." We are connected. That is, we are One. And if anything is proof of that, it's this pandemic. Peace.

    1. So good to hear from you, Dee. I hope your eyes are improving and you are able to do the things you love. Yes, it is hard to understand that some people can't follow simple rules to help the whole. As my son says, it's not like we are being asked to pick up a gun and fight... just to stay home and self-isolate to get this things under control. How hard is that? More difficult for some than others, true... but still... when lives are on the line, how hard is it to stay away from gatherings 'on the beach' or 'in restaurants'.

  9. everyone is entitled to their opinion, you should not be afraid to voice it!! i agree with you, but i always stay kind of quiet on the subject, people get so offended if they don't agree!! i think young adults should have more of a savings/cushion. everyone goes on vacation, drives a new car, but they don't have a savings account. we always did!!! happy mothers day, i hope you enjoy your day!!!

    1. You are right, Debbie... everyone does have a right to their own opinion. But I find these days that people are way too easily offended. So I tend to stay away from talking about politics or religion. However, this virus situation is confusing with what the government wants to do and what the medical advisors advise. Since no one is enforcing anything, people tend to do whatever they want - which makes bringing down the numbers difficult.
