Made yeast rolls....

Yes, I finally made yeast rolls. This is not a significant accomplishment.... but it's something I've never attempted before. However, it is something I've always wanted to try (nothing exciting like climbing to the top of Mount Everest - which, btw, I have no desire to do).

Anyway, the yeast rolls did come out fine... perfectly edible, but not as great as some I've tasted. If anyone out there has a really 'easy' but good recipe for yeast rolls, I'd love to have it.

Thinking about other things I've wanted to do, I have always wanted to sky-dive. Almost did it once when my daughter and her friends arranged to do it on one of her birthdays a few years ago. I watched from the ground in San Antonio and could almost feel the exhilaration as they soared downward towards us. Still think about it. And I was told that at my age, I would need a doctor's OK.

As for further adventures, I don't have a bucket list. There are some things that I would possibly like to do, but probably won't.... see the Galapagos Islands, visit the beaches of Oregon, visit possible family ancestors in England, Scotland, or Ireland.

I would definitely like to go back to Oahu and spend more time there with my son and his wife.  The secluded lava beaches are amazing. It would be great to spend mornings watching the sun rise and evenings watching it set over the water... the sound of the waves, the fresh air - all unbelievable.

Then - if and when this awful pandemic is ever over and if and when we ever feel comfortable traveling again, I want to go to the Hill Country and spend time with my daughter and her family.... as well as to New Orleans, Houston, and Baton Rouge to spend time with other family and friends. These are simple pleasures that are now missed.... even having dinner out with our youngest son, wife, and grand daughter here is a pleasure I miss and look forward to doing again more than ever.

If we take it one day at a time... it's do-able.

Thanks for reading my ramblings, stay home and stay safe!
Some places may be re-opening, but please don't let your guard down... not yet.

Hugs,
Rian

Had to add a picture of our mint here out front. It's doing so well... if it continues to spread, we may end up with a mint lawn. Smells wonderful!

  1. I've read elsewhere too that it isn't the material things we miss the most as a result of the pandemic but the time with family and friends. I am hopeful that you will be able to cross those items off your bucket list...sans the skydiving! That would scare the heck out of me.

    Take care and stay well!

  2. I could like a mint lawn. The cats would love a catnip lawn.

    1. I'm not sure my neighbors would approve... but like you, Joanne, I would love a mint lawn! I think the cats would like it too.

  3. I've never made yeast rolls but I do enjoy a baking powder biscuit, my grandmother sure could make some good ones. we cant to travel around in a motorhome again, islands I'd sure like to go but plane travel, not so sure of. I baked a smoked picnic ham, it was a lot of work rubbing the spices on it, then scoring the fat, then inserting the cloves, then baking, then basting with the marinade, then carving it, carving took eons it seemed. but it was so delicious, got it from a local butcher which I just found, trying to support local businesses. Hope you are doing well.

    1. We like baking powder biscuits too, Linda! I'm not a big fan of ham (although I do like bacon), but DH sure likes it... and yours does sound delicious.

  4. My grandmother, my mother, my sister, my son -- all made/make wonderful yeast breads and rolls. Somehow that gene skipped me. I have plenty of time to practice now, but then I would have to eat the results myself that would not be good for my waistline.

    1. Olga, I do have a fondness for bread... especially fresh made bread or rolls. And although this experiment with the yeast rolls was good... I know there are better recipes/techniques out there. So I will keep trying.

  5. Well, having done my share (and yours) of skydiving, I can say that it's wonderful. But now that I've retired from that pursuit, none too soon, I'm glad I still have the memories. I also traveled to my heart's content in earlier years, and have no interest in leaving my precious home town, even if I could. Who would want to travel these days? And where in the world would you go?

    1. DJan, THAT is the question these days... 'where in the world would you go?'
Like you, for the time being... I'll stay right where I am.

  6. Some of the places you want to visit intrigue me also but I probably won't get to them. Still they are fun to think about as we hang close to home. One day at a time works for me.

    1. Yes, I agree, Patti... I probably won't get to do some of those things, but it doesn't bother me. I've done a lot and grateful for all of it. If I get to do more, it will just be lagniappe.

  7. Such a good post. We never got out much before this pandemic but now I am sure missing the few things we did. For certain, I am missing my daughters and their families. I don't have a bucket list either, but I've always dreamed of living on a real farm with a barn, hay, and a tractor. I especially wish I had learned to ride a horse. I want a horse. Horses are beautiful. Hope your Mother's Day is a happy one.

    1. Henny, I always wanted a horse too. I did ride as often as I could, but never owned one. Gave my daughter riding lessons at 8 and a little palomino mare when she was 12. Now she has horses on her acreage and her daughter rides the cross country shows. Horses have quite an effect on one's life.

  8. hehehehe, yes mint is beautiful, but it will take over your garden in a very short time!! i have not sky dived, but have always thought about doing it. i worry about the spin, getting dizzy and then sick. we have ridden in a hot air balloon several times, that is amazing....and slow, so you can take everything in!!

i found a pretty simple bread recipe, if you would like to try it, i don't make rolls!!

    1. Hi Debbie! I have never been in a hot air balloon, but I do love flying (NOT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF THE VIRUS) but otherwise, yes... love to fly. And thanks for the bread recipe. I went to the site and printed it. Will let you know how it comes out.
