Plantings, Hawaii, and... alternative milk products

veg trug with dirt

Finally got the recommended dirt for our veg trug. We also bought a few plants:

There's bell peppers (yellow) in the back along with zucchini and yellow squash. Then in the front there's curly parsley, basil, and dill.

I wanted to plant lettuce and spinach, but need to wait till August to do this as apparently they are fall veggies. Anyway, we shall see how they do.

If my selection or spacing is questionable, I would appreciate any comments as I haven't planted anything in years (except for some hanging herbs on the porch)

Debbie (It's all about Purple blog), I know you use a trug as your blog is where I first saw it... so if you have any comments, your experience will be a big help. Also, thanks for the recommendation of the water bottles. We did do this. (and I love the pics of that carousel on your last post! It's gorgeous!)

Also, our oldest son and his wife are in Hawaii

Nothing else going on. I  have tried almond milk and cashew milk so far... both are ok, but not like real whole milk. I bought some Mootopia Lactose free milk this week as recommended by Annie (Hootin Anni). It is good! Since I'm not sure if lactose is part of my problem, I don't know how it will do. But I'm liking it... so, we'll see.

I also bought 2 types of yogurt recently. I don't normally do yogurt as it was on my 'no-go for migraines' list. But thought it might help my 'gut'. So I'm trying just a few tablespoons a day to see what happens. These are the 2 I bought:

Yoplait and Brown Cow yogurt

Guess that's it for today... nothing terribly exciting, but in today's world, I'm thankful for that. If I don't post again over the weekend, I hope you all have a great weekend! It's been in the 90's this week, but the weatherman says it's going to be lower next week... with some possible thunderstorms (we do need the rain).  Take care, and as always thanks for dropping by.

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. Rian, I was thinking about you last night. I was washing my milk bottles and having some trouble with milk residue in one of them, and wondered if you were using yours and had the same problem. I wonder if they sell a brush for that? Anyway that's awesome news about your oldest son in Hawaii, and if you decide on an alternate milk, please let us know! I drink whole milk too, but the older I get the more I wonder if I should...🤔

    1. I just use a baby bottle brush. If you don't have one, then you can pick one up in the baby section of the grocery. They are handy to have. Also, I clean my bottles by hand then put them in the dish washer. The Moo-topia is not an alternative as it is still whole milk, just lactose free. It does taste the same as good organic whole milk. As for the others, (almond and cashew) both taste OK, just not like real milk.

  2. Hooray for planting. Good luck on finding milk products that help - and have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Yes, hooray for planting! I like getting up in the morning and checking on how the veggies and herbs are doing...

  3. Was just looking at your picture of Ghost...he is a lot like our Smokey. He was a big boy, wasn't he? Just like Smokey. Hope your vegetables do well. The pictures of Hawaii are so beautiful and the quote on your picture of the beach is so true. I haven't walked on the beach in years. Sure miss doing it too. I need to talk Dan into taking a little trip to the beach.

    1. Henny, our Ghost was a she... and she was a strange one when we took her in at about 5 weeks old. Her mother just left her on our back porch. She didn't seem to be 'all there'... Vets told us that she had genetic kidney problems and possibly diabetes and didn't think she would survive the first year (maybe her mother knew). Well, she did have some 'oddities'... and definitely kidney problems, but she survived well for 15 years (and was well loved).
As for the beach... I too miss walking by the water... have to get over to the coast before too long... probably not this summer, but maybe next?

  4. Trug is a new word to me. And Hawaii must be lovely.

    1. It's a new word for me too, Joanne... but that's what Wayfair calls it. And Hawaii is lovely... never thought much about it until we visited our son when he lived on Oahu. It was really pretty wonderful. But they did live in a small town close to the water... no crowds, so green, and just beautiful.

  5. Your veg trug is so cool. Looks good with the plants and it has to be easy to manage. Good luck with the locotse free milk. You will know soon if that was your problem. Taste is important. Looks like your son and wife are enjoying beautiful Hawaii. A deserted beach is the best kind.

    1. I do like the Moo-topia... I hope I can continue to use it. Deserted beaches or quiet coves are the best!

  6. I don't have a problem with whole milk, but I don't drink it often. I do use half and half in my coffee, one cup a day, not much. And I do eat yogurt every day. I look forward to hearing how you do with that new milk. I drink soymilk mostly, my favorite. Hope this all helps your digestive problems.

    1. Thanks, DJan. I'm using the Moo-topia, yogurt, and bone broth... so far, so good.

  7. I do know that the mootopia helped me. I also like the fact since it's pasteurized 3 times it has a longer shelf life than regular milk!!!

    1. Thanks, Anni. I do like the Mootopia! And so far my veggies and herbs are doing well... but it's only been 2 days! ; )

  8. I like your veg trug. It's a nice height. I'm hoping to get to the garden center in the next week or so for plants. We had a frost warning last night so I'll hold off until the end of the month to be certain.
I'm no help with milk alternatives, supplements, and bone broth. So far I've not added anything to my diet.

    1. No prob, Mae. I'm not into supplements much myself... but since I'm trying to figure out if there's a reason for my digestive flare-ups, I'm trying a few things out - like lactose free milk, yogurt, and bone broth. Gluten free is not difficult, but still not sure it makes a difference.

  9. this is what i was looking for, i am so glad you started your garden. it looks good. you may need extra room for that yellow squash, it gets huge. you can use a trellis, and encourage it to grow up, or perhaps you bought the "bush" type, that is suited for containers. and be careful with your dill and parsley....those are the herbs my black swallowtail butterflies are attracted to. you may pick up 2 new hobbies, growing a garden and raising butterflies. at the very least, check the herbs for caterpillars before you eat them!!!

    1. Yes, I'm familiar with the Black Swallowtails loving the parsley, Debbie. I raised them myself years ago (although not in the quantities you do). I even wrote an article about it in our local Audubon newsletter back in 1999. I loved raising them. They were so beautiful! We use parsley a lot in our cooking, that's why I chose it - but realize it may have to be shared.

  10. How wonderful to hear your son and his wife are on Maui. Maui is indeed beautiful and less congested than Oahu. There's less COVID there too.
I drink almond milk or lactose free milk. I'm afraid lactose is usually not great for Asians.

    1. I've never been to Maui, but the pics are beautiful. However, where they lived in Oahu was really nice. It was on the central eastern side - trying to remember the name - but think it was Kailua. And although the almond milk and the cashew milk are OK, I find the lactose free Mootopia very good.
