lull time...

Thanksgiving is over... and there's about a week of *lull* time (you know the *lull* before the storm) - before I intend to get into the high gear for Christmas. Not that we do a lot of shopping, we don't.  Used to, but not anymore.  Since retirement, we basically just shop for the grandkids (and a little bit for the cats).

But everyone still comes over Christmas day.  Sometimes we have Christmas breakfast while opening gifts, sometimes Christmas dinner.  It's not like Thanksgiving where everything is planned, we kind of play it by ear.  Easier for all this way.  But I do do a lot of cookie baking in the weeks ahead and we do mail out holiday cards and goodies to family who don't live close.

So, during this lull time, we will decorate our tree (which we have put up... but no ornaments yet), buy our Christmas cards, and make lists. We will also do a lot of  cookie nibbling, holiday music listening, and maybe a bit more holiday decorating (we do put a live garland up on the fireplace mantle and around the front door around 10 days before Christmas... but that's about it).

At the moment we are anticipating another bout of winter weather which is supposed to arrive sometime tomorrow.  They are predicting possible ice, snow, and sleet by Friday am.  I already cancelled my doctor's appt for Friday morning. It was just an annual, so I can reschedule later. But if the weather is bad, I don't plan to drive in it.

I did however, go to pottery class today and my chess set is finally finished.  I had finished making it last semester, but hadn't finished glazing all the tiles and chess pieces.  Now I have.  Also I made a few mugs (as well as about 50 cylinders). I'm progressing in proficiency, albeit slowly.

Hope you are all having a lovely lull time...

Ghost and Julie are.  Here they are doing what cats do best... lying about...

And I really hope everyone stays safe out there.  I know some of you are having some really bad winter weather (much worse than we ever have here in Texas)... so please take care!

  1. This is my favorite time of Christmas, too. The weeks leading up. They are not so stressful as the week of Christmas. With my cat-sitting business I will be very busy the week of Christmas and in to the new year. Lots of fun, though. Love your pottery. Deb

    1. I'll bet this really is a busy time for your business, Deb. Hopefully your 'clients' don't live too far away so you don't have any bad weather traveling to do. But what a fun job!

  2. It's a nice quiet time, isn't it? And the weather across pretty much the entire country is cold, snowy and generally bad, making it perfect for sitting around a fire. Wish I had one. :-)

    1. That's what's great about technology, DJan. You can take a picture of a roaring fire... and then pull it up on your computer *full screen* and sit and read in front of it. What do you think?

  3. I'm actually rather glad Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October--gives more prep time between holidays!

Enjoy your lull -- and oh, what a gorgeous tree! I haven't had a real one in years, as our City no longer picks them up after Christmas, you have to dispose of your tree yourself (i.e. take it to the recycle centre). Not exactly doable for those without vehicles!

    1. Kim, our city picks both up and mulches the trees for residents (if you'd like). It is convenient... of course we probably *pay* for it somewhere down the line.

  4. It sounds like you are having more winter than we are right now. It will get here though.

    1. At the moment, Olga, we are having an Arctic blast or that's what the weatherman is calling it. It dropped from apparently 80 Wednesday to 27 by Friday morning. We awoke to rain, sleet, and ice. Roads are hazardous and most schools and activities were closed by Thurs. evening. Lots of power outages. Ours went out during the night, but luckily came back by morning. But many in the area still have no electricity.

  5. Sounds like the ideal Christmas. No hassle, nothing too hectic, just pleasure.
    Stay happy and well.

  6. Enjoy the lull and I hope the baking turns out really well. I like the sound of American Christmas cookies and must look for some recipes. Over here I've been making mince-pies and will be making Christmas gingerbread soon. We won't be having a tree as we'll be away for the festivities, but I'll put up a few decorations closre to the day.

PS I LOVE your mugs. :-)

    1. Thank you, Perpetua. The little cup and saucer in blue I make for my good friend who passed away in 2011. She and I had tea every Wednesday afternoon for years. Her favorite colors were blue and yellow, so I make her a teacup and put birdseed in it on her gravesite. The last one I made was found broken, so I just made her another...
