March 1st - Rabbit Rabbit! White Rabbit!

Rabbit Rabbit! White Rabbit!

hope this counts... it's basically white
(a clay sculped rabbit from days gone by)

and

Happy Mardi Gras!

Yes, we have a king cake... and there's a bit of a story behind it too. DH and I went to get a king cake yesterday, but once there - no king cakes were on display. However, we could see dozens behind the bread department on tiered trays. When I asked for one, the lady seemed a little confused and said that she would see if there were any left. (I could see dozens!

She later came back and asked me if I wanted traditional or cream cheese?... I said cream cheese. She disappeared again. In a little while she came back and handed me a cake. I thanked her and then looked at it and it said 'traditional'.  I called her back and she started  conferring with another lady in the mist of all the king cakes.

Finally another lady came out and asked if I wanted cream cheese or strawberry cream cheese? By this time I was beginning to wonder what the problem was, but said "either one will do". She brought me out a strawberry cream cheese king cake. I thanked her and left.

Later I waved at one of the employees who handles our curb side pickup and she came over to talk to me. She said that she was happy to see us inside the store again. Told her we came inside to get a king cake - and she looked surprised that we actually got one. Said that they had a tremendous order for king cakes to be delivered just yesterday and they were working like crazy to get the order out. Said I should guard my king cake with my life! (So now we knew what was going on...)

The beads in the trees in the French Quarter are all part of Mardi Gras. It's one of the reasons we put our Mardi Gras beads on our Christmas tree here in Texas.

The last pic is of my cousins in New Orleans with their grandkids several years ago (before the pandemic). This is how we all spent our Mardi Gras youth - on top of ladders watching the parades go by. I texted them this morning and no one is getting out there this year. They don't feel comfortable with the crowds yet (and I wouldn't either - it's too soon - IMO).

So, forgive me for posting again. It's not my usual once a week post lately...  things keep coming up... and I couldn't ignore the first of March and/or Mardi Gras.

Hugs (virtual),
Rian

    1. DJan, in New Orleans King cakes and king cake parties lead up to Mardi Gras. If you find the baby (or sometimes it's a pecan) in your slice, you get the pick your king or queen and you give the next party... and so on. The cake itself is generally plain (traditional) or cream filled (sometimes strawberry or raspberry cream). Mardi Gras is a fun time... although the crowds and drinking can get a bit rowdy on Mardi Gras day.

  2. Happy March 1, and Happy Mardi Gras. I visited New Orleans in December 2018 and fell in love with the French Quarter. I must admit though, Mardi Gras would not be my cup of tea...far too crowded and noisy.

    1. Mardi Gras day is extremely crowded and noisy (back to back people). But the week before and the parades are not that bad. The French Quarter itself is fun as long as you stay on the main drag... which is close to Jackson Square (which I heard was renamed???) The food in N.O. is fantastic.

  3. So glad you got an explanation for the king cake kerfuffle. I might have taken that treatment personally. Hope it was a good one.
Think that bunny counts. I forgot to say it once more.

    1. Patti, I knew something strange was going on with the king cake. I don't know why the first lady didn't just tell me...
And I'm glad my bunny counts!

  4. I am glad you were able to get a King cake. I have never experienced Mardis Gras although at one time it was something I hoped to do. Now, I am happy just hearing others' experiences.

  6. Well I have never heard of King Cake. It sure is pretty. Never seen the beads in the trees either and those are pretty. I have heard of Mardis Gras however. :) Your little white bunny is so cute. I want a big stuffed bunny rabbit for Easter. Guess I've gone into my second childhood but I really do want a stuffed bunny.

    1. I have several stuffed animals, Henny... one is a bunny. 3 sit on our rocker - supposedly for our grandchild ;)... but one is on my bed and there's a huge teddy on my dresser. So no, not a second childhood - maybe an extended one?

    1. Debbie, King cakes are like everything else, some really good, some not so much. The ones in New Orleans at certain bakeries are great. The Mardi Gras beads in the pic are not mine. You will see them in the trees around New Orleans and especially in the French Quarter. We have plenty from over the years that we use on our Christmas tree.
And yes, some do raise their shirts for beads, but not necessary!!

  8. King cake? what's that?
Your slices look pretty but I have no idea what the cake tastes like.

Has that lady in the picture a lamp post growing out of her head? sweet little kids.

    1. Friko, the king cake is made in thin layers - sometimes plain, sometimes with a cream cheese and/or fruit (usually strawberry or raspberry) filling. It is smothered in colorful sugar granules and usually has a tiny doll or pecan inside (for the party side of it). Some are really good, some can be dry.
And no, my cousin doesn't have a lamp post growing out of her head. They are probably waiting for a parade on St. Charles Ave. or Canal Street where lamp posts line the streets.
